Lucy Washington

Lucy Washington raised her two children and encouraged their love of music, song, and education in Summerville, SC. A talented soprano and dedicated member of her church, Bethel AME, she inspired many, contributed to Summerville's AME community, and made every person she met feel special. Mrs. Washington believed in miracles, often saw untapped potential in young people, and wanted to see hardworking students have fair opportunities to succeed. She lived for the youth of the church and was always there for them. The Lucy Washington Vocal competition is a tribute to the music she cherished, songs that lifted her spirit, and an investment in the education of talented young singers.
